Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga. –Defense was not the name of the game for either Delta State University or Valdosta State University as both teams combined for a 100 total points during the contest on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The Statesmen fell 59-41 snapping a six-game winning streak against the Blazers that dated back to 2006.
The Blazers (6-2, 3-1 GSC) offense set the tone for both teams, which border-lined on the fast and furious, scoring the first touchdown of the game, using a three play 77 yard drive. The Statesmen (3-4, 1-2 GSC) held the Blazers to a third-and-long situation before VSU quarterback Cayden Cochran connected with Seantavious Jones on a 74-yard strike downfield to take a lead 7-0 just 1:19 into the game.

Patrick Bethley for a 75-yard touchdown to even the score 7-7 with 13:30 left on the clock in the first quarter.
Wooden connected with Bethley for the second time on a 59-yard touchdown pass with 3:07 left in the first quarter to give the Green-and-White its first lead of the night at 14-10.
DSU did not retain the lead long as Cochran connected with Regginald Lewis on a 58-yard touchdown strike to put the Blazers ahead 17-14 at the 1:29 mark in the first quarter.
VSU extended its lead to 31-14 until the Statesmen put together a 9-play 75-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard
Brant Botill romp around the right-end for a touchdown to cut the Blazer lead to 31-20 going into the half.
Wooden finished the half 4-of-12 passing for 161 yards and two touchdowns while Bethley tallied two receptions for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
After holding the Statesmen to a punt on the opening drive of the second-half, the Blazers tacked on a touchdown run by Cochran from 1-yard out extending the lead to 38-20.
Delta State rallied for 21 unanswered points to take the lead on a 32-yard touchdown pass from Wooden to senior wide receiver
Lavon Downs, giving DSU what proved to be its final lead of the game at 41-38 with 3:28 remaining in the third quarter.
The Blazers regained the lead on the ensuing drive taking a 45-41 lead going into the final quarter of play and extended the lead to 52-41 with 13:13 remaining in the contest.
DSU threatened mid way through the fourth quarter but was unable to convert on fourth and five from the VSU 16, which helped set up the final score of the contest, as Valdosta State put together a 9-play 84-yard touchdown drive to go on top 59-41 and seal the victory for the Blazers.
Wooden finished 14-of-34 with a career best 340 yards and four touchdowns, including completions to seven different receivers. He was also intercepted three times, including an interception on the final play of the game.
Montavious Hill paced the Statesmen defense recording 10 total tackles while
C.J. Lester and
Diego Lubin each added seven a piece.
Despite ending the contest with 455 total yards of offense and scoring its highest point total of the season, DSU gave up 624 total yards on 81 plays to the Blazers.
Cochran finished 25-of-36 passing for 412 yards and six total touchdowns while running back Cedric O'Neal tallied 181 yards on 33 carries. Jones reeled in nine receptions for 210 yards and four touchdowns.
Delta State returns to action on October 27, at 6:00 p.m. at Parker Field-McCool Stadium to face the University of West Alabama for homecoming.
