Box Score CLEVELAND - The Lady Statesmen soccer program closed out the home schedule in 2012 Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 draw against Christian Brothers at Delta Field.
The Lady Statesmen (3-10-2, 2-6-1 GSC) took control of the game early when
Payten Pearson knocked home a loose ball in front of the net to put Delta State up just shy of the five minute mark.
Pearson's goal was her third straight game with a goal and her sixth of the season.
The Lady Statesmen had a run of scoring chances in the following minutes, but had shots blocked or pushed scoring chances wide.
After a couple scattered shots in the first 30 minutes of the match, Christian Brothers (5-9-1, 1-7-1 GSC) scored on their first real scoring chance as Carmen Manes put home a shot from about 20 yards out on the left side.
The Lady Statesmen had two more chances in the first half, but were unable to get a quality shot on target.
In the second half,
Kelsey Elling came up big for the Lady Statesmen in net, stopping four shots on target by the Lady Bucs, who controled most of the 45 minutes.
The Lady Statesmen were only able to get one shot on target. Delta State did have a penalty kick, but Robyn Wade tipped the
Ashley Goodlett attempt over the crossbar.
In the first overtime, Elling again made four stops to keep the game tied up. Goodlett pushed the only shot for the Lady Statesmen wide.
Elling finished with 12 saves in the match on 13 attempts.
The Lady Statesmen sit one point behind West Georgia for the final spot in the GSC Tournament with one game remaining. The Wolves own the tie breaker with Delta State, so th Lady Statesmen need a win in their final conference match at North Alabama for a chance at the GSC Tournament.
The Lady Statesmen will finish up the season on the road. Delta State will travel to Millsaps College Wednesday and will play at North Alabama for the final regular season game on Sunday.
