Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Lady Statesmen soccer team overcame a 2-0 deficit but fell to the Majors 3-2 after Millsaps' late goal Thursday night.
The Majors (7-8-1) got on the score sheet with a pair of first half goals. The first came on a penalty kick after Lady Statesmen goalkeeper collided with a Millsaps forward to save a scoring chance. Kaleigh Redhead scored the penalty for Millsaps.
Less than seven minutes later, Millsaps went up 2-0 with a goal off of a corner kick. Jamie Blair Page headed home Redhead's corner.
The Lady Statesmen (3-11-2) answered right away, scoring just 12 seconds later.
Payten Pearson sent a ball in to
Erin Tucker, who beat her defender and then the keeper to cut the deficit back to one goal. The goal was Tucker's third of the season.
In the second half, Tucker drew a foul in the box on the Majors, awarding a penalty kick for the Lady Statesmen. Senior
Michelle Laurenzi took the penalty and scored her second of the season to tie the game up at 2-2 with 28 minutes to play.
After a change in momentum, the Majors were able to grab it back with 11 minutes remaining, scoring the game winner on a counter attack.
Whitney Murchison carried the ball in to the attacking zone wide for the Majors and put a low cross in for Taylor Winslow, who volleyed the ball into the net to give Millsaps the lead and win.
The Lady Statesmen will return to action Sunday in the final game of the regular season at North Alabama. A win for Delta State in the conference match will give the Lady Statesmen a chance at a berth in the Gulf South Conference Tournament next week.
