Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen soccer teams season came to an end Sunday afternoon as the Lady Statesmen fell to North Alabama 5-1.
Postseason play was on the line for the Lady Statesmen (3-12-2, 2-6-1 GSC) Sunday as West Georgia lost earlier in the day, leaving opportunity for Delta State to take the final GSC Tournament seed with a victory.
North Alabama (11-4-1, 6-2-1 GSC) cancelled that chance when they scored three goals in the first 20 minutes to take a commanding lead. Chole Roberts scored her 14 and 15th goals of the year in the fifth and 15th minutes. Chole Richards scored at the 19:51 mark to put UNA up 3-0.
The highlight of the day for the Lady Statesmen came when senior captain
Michelle Laurenzi scored in the 41st minute. Laurenzi finished out her career with goals in back-to-back games, after scoring Thursday at Millsaps.
The goal was Laurenzi's third goal of the season.
North Alabama answered just minutes later though, scoring in the 44th minute to take a 4-1 lead into halftime. Melanie Leonida had the goal with Roberts on the assist.
Roberts scored the lone goal in the second half, just over two minutes in, putting the Lions up 5-1.
Kelsey Elling stopped seven of eight shots in the second half and finished with 12 saves total.
North Alabama had 31 shots, with 17 on goal, in the game. The Lady Statesmen finished with eight shot, three on goal.
The loss wraps up the season for the Lady Statesmen, who finish seventh in the Gulf South Conference.
