CLEVELAND - The Delta State Statesmen Soccer team blew a late lead and fell in overtime to Ouachita Baptist in a non-conference match on a cold Sunday afternoon.
With about 15 minutes left in regulation, the Statesmen's defense had trouble with the Tigers attack and it proved costly, giving up the tying goal. Taylor Christian kept the ball for the Tigers down close to the net on the left side. With the Statesmen defense closing down, Christian sent a ground cross through the box and Rizvan Ceka patiently waited for it and easily tied the game up at one with an open net.
The duo teamed up again in the seventh minute of overtime as Christian sent a through ball to Ceka in the box for a one vs one. Ceka beat Statesmen goalkeeper
Milos Boskovic to the left side for the game winner.
Despite a very cool day, the Statesmen came out hot and controlled most of the game. Delta State had several scoring chances early on, including a cross in by
Daniel Deblaere that was headed away by the Tigers defense, only to be struck with a side volley from
Amine Rahmani for a goal in the seventh minute.
The Statesmen had a couple other scoring chances in the first half, including a header by
Stetson Chamberlain that went inches left of the goal. Delta State outshot Ouachita Baptist 8-5 in the first half and 19-9 for the game.
In the second half, the tempo stayed the same for the Statesmen as they continued to put pressure on the Tigers. The Statesmen had three straight corner chances but were unable to get a shot off.
The Statesmen missed a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box and had several shots blocked or wide early on in the second half. After the Tigers tied up the game, Caue Da Silva missed on a good opportunity in the box to give the Statesmen the lead. The freshman's shot went straight to the Tigers goalkeeper David Henley.
In the overtime period, play stayed consistent, as the Statesmen continued to dominate early on.
Taylor Whyte put a shot high and
Luke Mason had a shot blocked while having a good passing opportunity to score. After a Statesmen corner kick, Ouachita Baptist answered with a quick counter attack that led to the game-winning goal.
The Statesmen will return to action Tuesday when they travel back to Memphis, Tenn. to make up a conference match against Christian Brothers that was postponed.
