Box Score MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Delta State baseball team started the 2012 season with a bang Friday afternoon against the University of Montevallo. The Statesmen offense put runs on the board in all but one inning, as the squad came away with a 24-3 victory over the Falcons.
The Statesmen (1-0) offense wasted little time in getting to work, as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. After
Michael Vinson and
Kris Koerper brought runs home with RBI singles,
Brent Langston cleared the bases with a two-run home run over the center field fence.
Down 4-0, Montevallo (2-3) tried to get back in the game with a run in the bottom half of the first. Will Fulmer brought Chris Ross home with a double to left field that almost cleared the fence.
The Statesmen however came back with two runs in the top of the second, and were off to the races after that. The Statesmen scored 12 answered runs over a four inning period from the second to the sixth. The run was punctuated by a six-run fifth inning.
Jon Carnahan hit his first home run of the season for the Statesmen in the fifth. The homer put three runs on the board for the Statesmen.
The Falcons were looking for any signs of life heading into the bottom of the sixth, as they trailed 16-1. Montevallo found a little offense with two runs in the inning. Vincente Andrews hit a two-run homer over the right field fence. The run closed the deficit to 16-3, but the Statesmen offense was not done.
Over the final three innings, the Statesmen added eight more runs without yielding any more to the Falcons. The onslaught allowed the Statesmen to cruise to the 24-3 victory.
Six Statesmen recorded multi-hit games. Vinson and Koerper each had four hits and four RBI's in the game. Carnahan had a huge game for the Statesmen, as he went 3-for-4 with six RBI's. Two of Carnahan's hits were a double and the home run.
Aaron Newcomb (1-0) turned in a great start on the mound for the Statesmen, and picked up the win. The opening day starter pitched five innings, allowed just one run, and struck out seven. Newcomb allowed just two hits, and also walked two batters.
Tyler Dalton came on in relief of Newcomb and pitched the final four innings. Dalton allowed two runs on three hits, and struck out three batters.
The Falcons went through five pitchers during Friday's game, and all five gave up runs. Alex Guilford (0-1) suffered the loss, and was roughed up in 3.2 innings of work. Guilford gave up seven runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked one.
The Statesmen scored 24 runs on 26 hits, and had one error in the field. The Falcons scored three runs on five hits, and had four errors.
