No. 13 Statesmen rally for 4-3 win over Barry

VALDOSTA, Ga. - Jonathan Andrews' sac-fly RBI in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the No. 13 Statesmen (8-1) of Delta State University to a 4-3 victory over Barry University (4-7) Sunday, Feb. 26 at Billy Grant Field in game six of the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Valdosta State University.  With the victory, DSU closes out the HIC with a 2-1 record.  The Statesmen scored their four runs on eight hits with an error in the victory, while the Buccaneers accounted for three runs on six hits.

DSU took an early 2-0 lead in the third on an RBI single by Ben Kingsley.  Jordan Chovanec and Jonathon Andrews came in to score.  

Barry scratched the scoredboard in the top of the sixth as Sheehan Planas-Artega came in to score on a throwing error by DSU.  Planas-Artega doubled to right to open the inning.

The Statesmen made it 3-1 in the bottom of the sixth on a towering solo home run by Kris Koerper (1) off Barry starter Kevin Youst.  

The Bucs plated a single run in the top of the eighth on a bases loaded walk and a run in the top of the ninth to tie it up at 3-3 off an RBI single from Luis Arrizerieta.  

Tied at 3-3 heading into the last of the ninth, the Statesmen got a leadoff single from Jon Carnahan,  After Josh Crowdus pinch ran for Carnahan, Crowdus swiped second.  A bunt single from Taylor Aldridge moved Crowdus to third with one out.  Chovanec was intentionally walked and with an 0-1 count, Andrews flied out deep to right allowing Crowdus to score the game-winning run.

Jordan Moore (2-0) claimed the win in relief for the Statesmen.  The junior from Calhoun City, Miss., worked 1.2 innings allowing one run on two hits with a walk and two strikouts.  Moore surrendered the game-tying run in the top of the ninth for Barry, but DSU rallied for the win in the bottom of the inning.

Barry's Calvin Rayburn (1-1) was saddled with the loss in relief after working 2.0 innings of relief.  

Colton Mitchell got the start for the Statesmen and pitched a gem for 7.0 innings.  The junior lefthander allowed a single run on just two hits with two walks and eight strikeouts.  

Brent Kakwitch and Taylor Aldridge paced the Statesmen at the plate with two hits each.  Sam Kidd, Kingsley, Andrews and Koerper all finished with one RBI each.  

Delta State returns to the diamond on Saturday, March 3 at the University of Alabama-Huntsville in the Gulf South Conference opening series.  First pitch is set for 12 p.m. for Saturday's doubleheader and 12 p.m. for Sunday's series finale.
