Statesmen back to winning ways with 13-3 victory over OBU

Box Score CLEVELAND – The Delta State University baseball team took the field Tuesday night, as they looked to rebound from a rough weekend. The Statesmen did rebound, and the weather stayed away, as the squad defeated the Tigers of Ouachita Baptist 13-3 in seven innings.

The Tigers (14-14) started quickly, and took an early lead in the top of the second inning, Landon Moore singled to left field with one out, and later scored on a two-out base hit by Jace Melby.

Down 1-0, the Statesmen (16-5, 3-3 GSC) offense went to work in the third inning with four runs. The inning began a four inning scoring streak by the Statesmen. The fourth started with Sam Kidd being hit by a pitch, and Morris Grant followed with his second base hit of the night. Ben Kingsley, who earlier extended his current hitting streak to 17 games, scored Kidd with a base hit to left field. With the score tied at one, Grant was able to score on a passed by that got by Tiger catcher Tom Ward. With two outs, Kingsley was able to come home on a wild pitch by Kurt Peppenhorst. A double steal let Jon Carnahan score, and the Statesmen took the 4-1 lead.

Ouachita Baptist came back with two runs in the fourth inning to cut the Statesmen lead to just one. Melby sent a base hit up the middle, and two runners were able to score, as the hit made the game a 4-3 affair.

The Statesmen offense responded with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Ben Kingsley sent his third hit of the night into left field, and Jonathan Andrews was able to score on the play.

Up 5-3, the Statesmen blew the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Andrews reached on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded, and Brent Kakwitch was able to score. Then with the bases still full, Kidd cleared the bases with a 3-RBI triple to right field. Grant then brought Kidd home with a base hit to left field. The offensive inning for the Statesmen put them up 10-3.

With the score still 10-3, the Statesmen put the 10-rule into play with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth. After a pitch hit Kakwitch, Kris Koerper came in to pinch hit, and he crushed his second home run of the season over the wall in left –center field. The home run put the Statesmen up 12-3.  Marc McMillian then came in to hit, and he laced a double to left field. Andrews then brought McMillian home with a double of his own.

Down 13-3, the Tigers could not score a run in the seventh inning, which put the 10-run rule into effect, and ended the game.

The Statesmen scored their 13 runs on 12 hits, and did not have an error charged against them. The Tigers scored their three runs on eight hits, and had two errors against them. Kingsley finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's for the Statesmen, and Grant also went 3-for-4 with an RBI.
