Box Score HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The No. 11 Delta State baseball team came into Sunday's game with Alabama-Huntsville looking to win two-of-the-three games in the series. Behind a tremendous performance of the mound, the Statesmen did just that with a 5-1 victory over the Chargers.
The Statesmen (10-2, 2-1) started scoring early, and brought the first run of the game home in the opening inning.
Sam Kidd led off the inning with a base hit, and later scored when
Ben Kingsley singled to center field. The run gave the Statesmen the early 1-0 advantage.
Up 1-0, the Statesmen added to their lead by scoring a run in the third, fourth, and fifth innings. In the third inning,
Jonathan Andrews reached base on a single, and later scored on a base hit into right field by
Brent Kakwitch. In the fourth inning,
Michael Vinson reached on a single to the right side, and later advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Tyler Aldridge then brought Vinson home with base hit into left field. The run put the Statesmen up 3-0.
In the fifth inning, the Statesmen offense again went to work.
Jonathan Andrews led the inning off with a triple to left center field. Andrews was then brought home on a groundout by
Sam Kidd.
Already up 4-0, the Statesmen added their final run in the top of the eighth inning. Vinson reached first after being hit by a pitch.
Morris Grant, who came in to run for Vinson, later scored on a base hit by
Brent Langston in right field.
Having been kept off the scoreboard for the game, Alabama-Huntsville (8-11, 1-2) plated their first run in the bottom of the eighth. Justin Pearson led the inning off with a double, and then scored when Justin Riddle reached on a Statesmen error. The run made it a 5-1 game, but that is as close as the Chargers would get.
The Statesmen got a stellar performance on the mound from senior
Aaron Newcomb (3-0). Newcomb pitched the full nine innings, gave up one unearned run on five hits, walked one, and struck out 12. The 12 strikeouts by Newcomb is a new career high.
David Kendrick (2-2) started the game for the Chargers and suffered the loss. Kendrick pitched 7.2 innings, gave up four earned runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out four.
The Statesmen will continue the 2012 season this upcoming Saturday, as they begin a 10-game home stand. The Statesmen will open home stand with a double header against Abilene Christian at Ferriss Field.
