Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark.—The Delta State University baseball team traveled to Monticello, Ark. on Wednesday to face the Boll Weevils of the University of Arkansas Monticello. After the first couple innings, the Statesmen offense came through, as they cruised to an 11-3 victory.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when the Statesmen plated two runs. With one out in the inning,
Jonathan Andrews doubled to left field, which moved
Brent Kakwitch to third. A sacrifice fly by
Jordan Chovanec was then enough to bring Kakwitch home, and advance Andrews to third. While on third, Andrews was able to score on a passed ball that gave the Statesmen the 2-0 advantage.
The Statesmen (24-10) were still up 2-0 heading into the sixth inning when they broke the game open.
Michael Vinson was walked to lead off the inning, and he was able to advance to third on a base hit by
Ben Kingsley.
Brent Langston then walked which loaded the bases. With the bases loaded, Kakwitch sent a double into center field that brought both Vinson and Kingsley home. After the bases were loaded again, Chovanec sent a base hit into right field, and Langston came into score. After Kakwitch scored on a sacrifice fly,
Chad Fortenberry brought two more runs home with a single to center field. The runs jumped the Statesmen's lead up to 8-0.
The offense for the Statesmen was not done, as they plated three more runs in the seventh inning. A single by Kakwitch brought Langston home with one out. With two outs, Chovanec sent a 2-RBI single into right field. The base hit put the Statesmen up 11-0 heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Boll Weevils (15-23) found some offense in the bottom of the seventh. Hunter Allday sent a single into right field. The base hit was the first of the game for the Weevils. Tino Trujillo followed with a base hit of his own up the middle. Paul Parsels then cleared the bases with a double to right field. Justin Hollis then brought Parsels home with a single to left field. The runs cut the Statesmen's lead to 11-3, but that s as close as it would get.
Ricky Winters (2-0) pitched a gem for the Statesmen on the mound, as he tossed five no-hit innings. While not allowing a hit, Winters struck out five, and did not walk a batter. The performance netted Winters his second victory of the season.
Chris Guzman (4-3) suffered the loss for Monticello. Guzman pitched 5 innings, gave up four runs with three being earned, walked two, and struck out two.
Chovanec had a big day at the plate for the Statesmen. The center fielder was 2-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBIs. Kakwitch was also 2-for-4 with 3 RBIs. The Statesmen scored their 11 runs on 10 hits, and they were also charged with one error.
The Weevils scored their three runs on four hits, and were charged with four errors during the game.
The Statesmen will be back at Ferriss Field to resume Gulf South play this weekend, as they host the University of New Orleans. The series gets underway with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m. with airtime on the Statesmen Sports Network set for 2:45 p.m.
