Box Score 2 CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University baseball team returned to Ferriss Field Saturday, as they resumed Gulf South play against the University of New Orleans. After walking-off to win game one 3-2, the Statesmen got a perfect performance from
Colton Mitchell, as they won game two 4-0.
The Privateers struck first on Saturday when they took the lead in game on in the first inning. Blake LeBlanc led off the game with a double to left-center field. With one out in the innings, LeBlanc was able to score off a sacrifice-fly by Cameron Wheeless.
Down 1-0, the Statesmen offense tied the game in the third inning. With two outs,
Jonathan Andrews hit an infield single, and advanced to second when
Sam Kidd was walked. With the bases loaded,
Ben Kingsley was hit by a pitch, and Andrews came in to score, which tied the game at 1-1.
After leaving the bases loaded in the fourth inning, they came back in the fifth to take the lead.
Jordan Chovanec led the frame off with a single through the right side. Later in the inning, a groundout by
Brent Kakwitch was enough for Kingsley to score and give the Statesmen the 2-1 lead.
The game remained 2-1 until the Privateers tied things up in the seventh. Beau Boudreaux walked to start the inning, and later stole home to tie the game at two.
The game was tied at two until the bottom of the ninth. Kidd reached on a walk with one out, and with two outs,
Jon Carnahan brought Kidd home for the winning run with a walk-off single to left-center. The run gave the Statesmen the 3-2 win in game one.
Brandon Hardin (3-4) picked up the win for the Statesmen in game one. Hardin came in from the bullpen with one out in the ninth, and held for the victory.
Aaron Newcomb started the game, and did not receive a decision. Newcomb pitched 8.1 innings, gave up just two runs on five hits.
Kyle Zara (0-1) suffered the loss for the Privateers. Zara gave up the winning run in the ninth inning.
Game two will go down as a special one in Statesmen history. Starter
Colton Mitchell, a junior from Lake, Miss. threw the first perfect game in program history. The no-hitter was the 11th in the Statesmen history, and came on the day of the 50th anniversary since the Statesmen's first ever no hitter. A.C. Williams pitched the first no hitter in Statesmen history versus Mississippi College on April 14, 1962
The Statesmen offense provided Mitchell all the offense he would need with four runs starting with two in the first. Kidd was walked with one out. Kingsley then brought Kidd home with a double down the left field line.
Michael Vinson later brought Kingsley home with a base hit to second base.
The Statesmen added a run in both the third and fifth inning. Vinson brought Kidd home with a double in the third, and later Vinson brought Carnahan home with another double in the fifth to help the Statesmen to the 4-0 victory.
The four runs were more than enough for Mitchell. He struck out seven without allowing a walk to improve his record to 5-0 en route to perfection.
Cory Myers (1-3) suffered the loss for the Privateers. He tossed three innings, and gave up three runs on five hits while walking two, and striking out three.
With the sweep the Statesmen (26-10, 11-6) have won three straight Gulf South Conference series. The Statesmen and Privateers (13-21, 5-14 GSC) will close out their series Sunday at Ferriss Field with first pitch at 2 p.m. Air time on the Statesmen Sports Network is set for 1:45 p.m.
