Statesmen defeat Southern Arkansas at Ferriss Field

Box Score CLEVELAND— After falling 4-3 in Magnolia, Ark., the Delta State University baseball team hosted Southern Arkansas looking for revenge. After going down 2-0, the Statesmen rallied with four unanswered runs, as they came away with a 5-3 victory at Ferriss Field.

The MuleRiders (26-13) came out in the first inning, and took a 2-0 lead. David Allday brought home Gavin McCauley with a base hit to right field. Brady Capshaw brought Allday home with a double down the left field line.

The Statesmen (27-11) came right back in the bottom of the first inning. After three straight hits to start the inning, Jon Carnahan brought two runners home with a double to right center. The runs tied the game up at 2-2.

The game remained tied at 2-2 until the sixth inning. After Sam Kidd and Michael Vinson reached base, Carnahan again roped a 2-RBI double that gave the Statesmen the 4-2 lead.

Down 4-2, the MuleRiders cut their deficit to one run in the seventh inning. Capshaw sent an RBI single center field that scored Trey Buck. The run made it a 4-3 game.

With their lead cut to one, the Statesmen responded in the bottom of the seventh inning. Josh Crowdus was brought home on a single to right field by Sam Kidd. The run extended the Statesmen's lead to 5-3, which is where it would stay.

Drew Milligan (2-0), pitched three innings in relief for the Statesmen, and picked up the win. Milligan did not allow a run in his three innings of work, and struck out three. Brandon Hardin (3) pitched the ninth innings, and recorded his third save of the season.

Cory Roper (3-3) suffered the loss for Southern Arkansas. Roper pitched 5 innings, gave up four runs, struck out two, and did not issue a walk.

The Statesmen will resume Gulf South Conference play this weekend, as they will play their final road GSC series of the season. They will travel to face Christian Brothers beginning with a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m., and airtime on the Statesmen Sports Network is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
