Statesmen use big eighth inning to defeat Henderson State

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Delta State University baseball team began their final road series of the season Tuesday, as they took on the Reddies of Henderson State. After taking the lead in the third inning, the Statesmen never looked back, as they came away with the 7-3 victory.

After two scoreless innings, the Statesmen (31-11) came through with the first run of the game in the top of the third. Tyler Aldridge led the frame off with a double down the left field line. After advancing to third, Aldridge was able to come home on a groundout by Jordan Chovanec.

Up by a run, the Statesmen added to their lead in the top of the fifth. With two men on base, Aldridge flew out to center field, but an error by Henderson State allowed Brent Kakwitch to score from second on the play. The run doubled the Statesmen's advantage to 2-0.

Down by two, the Reddies got back into the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Taylor Coleman started the inning with a base hit into right field. Jordan Trosclair scored Coleman with a double into left field.

With their lead cut to one, the Statesmen offense went back to work in the top of the sixth. With Chovanec on third, Ben Kingsley sent a base hit into left field, which brought Chovanec home, and extended the lead to 3-1.

The Reddies (22-22) did not go away, as they got the run back in the bottom of the sixth. Michael Schell led the inning off with a double to right field. He later scored from third when Brittain Diamond grounded out. Once again the Statesmen lead was cut to one at 3-2.

The back and forth between the two teams continued in the seventh inning. Josh Crowdus scored Aldridge for the Statesmen in top of the seventh. Michael Corso brought Zac Zdanowicz home with a base hit for HSU in the bottom of the seventh.

With their lead again at just one run, the Statesmen offense put the game away in the top of the eighth inning. With the bases loaded, Jon Carnahan sent a base hit into center field that brought both Chovanec and Sam Kidd home. Michael Vinson followed with a base hit of his own, which scored Kingsley. The run put the Statesmen up for good at 7-3.

The Statesmen scored their seven runs on 11 hits, and did not get charged with an error. The Reddies scored three runs on eight hits, and were charged with two errors in the game.

Ricky Winters (3-0) picked up his third win of the season for the Statesmen. Winters pitched 5.2 innings, gave up two runs on seven hits, walked two, and struck out five. James Hudelson (1) recorded his first save of the season. Hudelson pitched the final 2.2 innings, and did not give up a hit while walking one, and striking out three.

Anthony Gilliland (0-2) suffered the loss for the Reddies. Gilliland pitched 7 innings, gave up four runs with two being earned, walked one, and struck out one.

The Statesmen will play their final road game of the regular season Wednesday, as they close out their series with Henderson State. After the game, the Statesmen will close out the regular season at home this weekend against West Georgia. Game time for Wednesday is set for 3 p.m.
