Statesmen finish road schedule with rout of Henderson State

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The Delta State University baseball team closed out their series with Henderson State University on Wednesday at Clyde Berry Field. The Statesmen finished road play in style by cruising past the Reddies 15-5.

After a scoreless first inning, the Statesmen offense came to life in the top of the second inning. After Jon Carnahan led the inning off with a double, Brent Langston sent a two run homer over the fence in left field. Sam Kidd continued the inning with double, and Tyler Aldridge brought Kidd home with the third double of the inning for the Statesmen.

Up 3-0, the Statesmen blew the game open with seven runs in the top of the third inning. The Statesmen scored their seven runs in the inning on four hits, and were aided by an error from Henderson State. Carnahan had a huge inning, with two base hits, including a 2-RBI double to left center field.

The Statesmen offense kept rolling, as they added four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Langston led the inning off with a single, and later scored a run when a pitch hit Jordan Chovanec. With the bases loaded, Cody Hester came in to pinch hit, and sent a bases clearing double into center field. The runs gave the Statesmen the commanding 14-0 lead.

Henderson State tried to climb back into the game with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Reddies scored their four runs on six hits, and were aided by two Statesmen errors in the inning.

The Statesmen (32-11) added one more run in the top of the sixth inning. Brent Kakwitch scored Jonathan Andrews with a sacrifice fly to right field. The run gave the Statesmen the 15-4 lead going into the seventh inning. The Reddies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 15-5 game, but the Statesmen were able to get out of the inning, and get the 15-5 victory as the 10-run rule went into effect.

Carnahan led the way for the Statesmen offense by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Hester finished 1-of-2 with three RBIs as well. The Statesmen scored their 15 runs on 12 hits, and were charged with three errors.

Henderson (22-23) State scored their five runs on eight hits, and were charged with two errors in the game.

Jordan Moore (6-1) pitched 3 innings, and picked up the win for the Statesmen. Moore allowed four runs on five hits, but only two were earned, and also struck out four without issuing a walk.

Scott Shimp (1-2) suffered the loss. Shimp pitched just 2 innings, gave up eight runs with seven being earned, walked one, and struck out four.

Now that the Statesmen have completed their road schedule, the squad will finish up GSC and regular season play this weekend at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen host West Georgia for three games; starting with a Saturday doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. Airtime on the Statesmen Sports Network on Saturday is set for 2:45 p.m.
