Box Score 2 CLEVELAND – The No. 9 Delta State University baseball team came into Saturday's doubleheader against West Georgia with a chance to seal up at least a share of the Gulf South Conference regular season title. The Statesmen took advantage of the opportunity, as they swept the Wolves by the scores of 12-2, and 3-1.
The Statesmen came out of the gates quickly in game one by scoring two runs in the first inning. After reaching base on an infield single,
Jordan Chovanec stole home later in the inning for the first run of the game.
Brent Kakwitch later scored
Sam Kidd with a groundout to short stop.
Up 2-0, the Statesmen added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Brent Langston scored a run on a single by
Josh Crowdus. Kidd later brought home Crowdus with a sacrifice fly to center field, and a base hit by
Michael Vinson scored Chovanec in the inning to give the Statesmen the 5-0 lead.
Already in control, the Statesmen added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Jon Carnahan crushed his third home run of the season over the left field wall. The homer extended the Statesmen's advantage to 7-0.
The Wolves tried to get back into the game with a run in the top of the fifth. Andy Marinelli scored Garrett May on a groundout to give West Georgia their first run of the game.
The Statesmen responded in the bottom half of the fifth with a run of their own.
Ben Kingsley scored when
Tyler Aldridge grounded into a double play.
Once again the Wolves tried to come back with a run in the sixth inning. Brett Wright scored Tanner Drennen on a base hit to left field.
Still holding an 8-2 lead, the Statesmen put the game away with four runs in the last two innings. Chovanec sent a triple into right center field in the seventh, which scored Crowdus. Then in the eighth inning, Carnahan blasted his second home run of the game, and fourth of the season, as he sent a two-run homer over the wall in left field. A double by
Kris Koerper scored
Marc McMillian to end the game, and give the Statesmen the 12-2 victory.
Josh Branstetter (4-3) picked up the victory for the Statesmen. Branstetter pitched 7 innings, gave up two runs on 10 hits, walked two, and struck out five.
Ricky Winters pitched the final inning for the Statesmen without giving up a hit.
Cody Skinner (6-4) suffered the loss for the Wolves. Skinner pitched 4 innings, gave up seven runs with four being earned on seven hits, and walked three batters.
Game two was completely different than game one, as it turned into mostly a pitcher's duel.
Once again the Statesmen offense started quick with two runs in the first inning. Chovanec led the game off with a single to right field, and later came in to score on a base hit from Kidd. Koerper later brought Kidd home with a base hit into left center field.
The Statesmen held onto their 2-0 lead until the Wolves (22-22, 9-12 GSC) plated a run in the sixth inning. Wright brought home Keith Borger with a base hit into right field. The run made it a 2-1 game, and ended
Colton Mitchell's scoreless inning streak at 21.1 innings.
The Statesmen (34-11, 16-7 GSC) added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. Koerper brought home Kidd with a base hit to center field. The run made it a 3-1 game, which is where the game would stay.
Mitchell (7-0) pitched his way to the win for the Statesmen. Mitchell pitched a complete game 7 innings, allowed just one run on four hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out eight. It was Mitchell's fifth complete game of the season.
Chase Riemer (4-2) suffered the loss. Riemer pitched 5.1 innings, allowed three runs on six hits, walked two, and struck out three.
The Statesmen will close out the regular season with West Georgia on Sunday. Sunday is also Senior Day for the Statesmen, as they will honor five seniors before the game. A Statesmen vicotry would also clinch the outright GSC title for the Statesmen. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m., with airtime at 1:45 p.m. on the Statesmen Sports Network.
