Box Score CLEVELAND—The No. 9 Delta State University baseball team closed out the 2012 regular season by honoring five seniors for Senior Day at Ferriss Field. The Statesmen sent their seniors out in style, as they completed the sweep of West Georgia with a 7-4 victory.
The Wolves (22-23, 9-13) struck first in top of the first inning. Stuart Drew reached base on an infield single, and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Andy Marinelli. The run gave the Wolves the early 1-0 advantage.
Down by a run, the Statesmen offense responded in the bottom of the third inning.
Sam Kidd brought
Tyler Aldridge home on a base hit into left field. The run knotted the game up at 1-1.
The Statesmen (35-11, 17-7) offense came through again in the bottom of the fifth inning, and took the lead. With the bases loaded,
Jon Carnahan sent a 2-RBI base hit into left field, which gave the Statesmen the 3-1 lead.
The Wolves' offense got going in the top of the sixth inning, as they retook the lead. With the bases loaded Evan Hester sent a 3-RBI double to the right center field wall. The runs gave the Wolves the lead at 4-3.
The Statesmen did not stay down long, and grabbed the lead right back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Aldridge brought
Brent Kakwitch home with double to the wall in left center field. After advancing to third, Aldridge came home on an RBI single by
Josh Crowdus. The two runs gave the Statesmen the lead back at 5-4.
Up by a run, the Statesmen put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Michael Vinson scored Kidd from first with a triple to right center field. Carnahan then brought Vinson home with a sacrifice fly to left field. The run put the Statesmen up for good at 7-4.
Aaron Newcomb (8-2) picked up his eighth win of the season for the Statesmen. Newcomb pitched 7 innings, gave up four runs with two being earned, walked one, and struck out one.
Brandon Hardin recorded his fourth save of the season when he closed out the ninth inning.
David Collins (0-1) suffered the loss for the Wolves. Collins pitched .2 innings in relief, and gave up two earned runs on three hits.
The win gave the Statesmen the outright regular season Gulf South Conference Championship. They will travel to Rome, Ga. Next week for the GSC Tournament, and will face Christian Brothers in the first round on Friday. Game times for the GSC tournament will be released on Monday, and all the games for the Statesmen will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network.
