Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. – The No. 15 ranked Statesmen (23-9, 9-6 GSC) of Delta State University couldn't figure out Chad Boughner on Saturday, as the No. 8 ranked Lions (27-11, 8-7 GSC) of the University of North Alabama claimed a 4-1 victory in the series finale. The Lions' starter allowed just one run on two hits in the victory.
The Lions took an early 2-0 lead in the first off Statesmen starter
Josh Branstetter. Back-to-back singles by Josh Doyle and Jake Sloan got UNA rolling in the inning before back-to-back walks to Josh Cyr and J.P. LaMunyon brought home the first run. Josh Carpenter delivered a sac=fly RBI to bring in the second run.
UNA tacked on a run in the second inning on Doyle's RBI infield single, plating Drew Parker, who singled to start the inning.
Sloan extended the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a towering solo home run over the right field wall to put the Lions up 4-0.
The Statesmen finally ended Chad Boughner's no-hitter in the seventh inning, as DSU's
Jon Carnahan singled to right-center.
Michael Vinson followed with an RBI triple to left to get the Green-and-White on the board.
Boughner (7-2) kept the Statesmen at bay in the final two innings to claim his first complete game victory of the season. The junior from Florence, Ala., carried a no-hitter for a large portion of the game and finished with five strikeouts and two walks.
Branstetter (2-2) was the hard luck loser after allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Statesmen continue their five game road swing on Tuesday at Mississippi Valley State in Itta Bena. The single game is schedule for 4 p.m. at Delta Devils Field. The game will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting at 3:45 p.m. with the DSU Alumni Association Statesman Game Day.
