NCAA CWS: Statesmen to face Minnesota State-Mankato Thursday

CARY, N.C. - The No. 2 ranked Statesmen (48-13) of Delta State University will face the No. 4 ranked Mavericks (50-11) of Minnesota State University-Mankato, who eliminated Southern New Hampshire 6-5 on Wednesday,  in the national semifinals at the NCAA College World Series on Thursday, May 31.  First pitch is set for 3 p.m. EST/2 p.m. CST at Coleman Field on the USA Baseball National Training Center.

Delta State, undefeated at the CWS after downing St. Mary's 4-1 and Catawba 6-5, is one win away from returning to the national championship game for the first time since winning the title in 2004. DSU would not be eliminated with a loss, but it would set up a rematch between the two schools on Friday, June 1 at a yet to be determined time.

Minnesota State-Mankato dropped its opening game of the CWS 3-2 to Southern New Hampshire, but has rallied for back-to-back elimination game victories against Chico State 6-5 and SNHU 6-0.

The two teams have met only once on the diamond in the 1978 NCAA South Central Region Tournament at Ferriss Field in Cleveland.  The Statesmen claimed a 14-11, 10 inning victory in the contest.  Current DSU head coach Mike Kinnison was the shortstop for the Statesmen in the game.

Thursday's game will be broadcast on the Statesmen Sports Network starting at 2:45 p.m. EST/1:45 p.m. CST with the DSU Alumni Association Statesmen Game Day Report. Matt Jones has the call.

The other half of the bracket features undefeated West Chester (44-10) versus Catawba (45-16) at 7 p.m. EST.  The Rams of West Chester defeated Chico State 4-0 and Southern New Hampshire 13-7 to get to Thursday's matchup.  The Indians of Catawba edged St. Mary's 5-4 after a fierce Rattlers ninth inning rally to advance.  WCU would not be eliminated with a loss, but it would set up a rematch between the two schools on Friday, June 1 at a yet to be determined time.
