Lady Statesmen Soccer Game Notes (PDF)
CLEVELAND - The Lady Statesmen soccer team comes back to Delta Field this weekend for a pair of non-conference tests against Gulf South Conference schools Union and North Alabama.
Union Series
The Lady Statesmen will open things up this weekend with a match against transitioning GSC member Union University for a non-conference test. The two schools have played each other four times in history, with Union holding a 3-1 advantage. This will be the first of two matches between the two schools with the second match (10/12) counting for the GSC standings.
North Alabama Series
Delta State is in a similar position when they host fellow GSC school North Alabama on Sunday. The game will be a non-conference match as the two schools play twice this season with the second match (10/28) counting toward conference standings. UNA holds a 7-1 series lead over the Lady Statesmen.
Pearson Streaking
After being heading pointless in the opening three games of the season,
Payten Pearson has gone on a four-game streak where the forward has scored points in each match. During the streak, Pearson has had seven total points with three goals and an assist.
After scoring the eventual game winner against Shorter University and adding a goal in the match against Alabama-Huntsville, the Fort Worth, Texas native scored a header at West Alabama and assisted on
Lauren May's goal at West Florida last week.
May breaks through in a hurry
Incoming sophomore
Lauren May made her entrance grand for the Lady Statesmen last week. After missing the first five games of the season due to injury, May was subbed into the West Alabama for her first action with the Lady Statesmen.
May didn't wait long to make a splash, scoring in her first minute as a Lady Statesmen off of a give-and-go to
Ashley Goodlett, who hit May with a through ball pass that she put in the lower left corner against West Alabama. She became the first Lady Statesmen to score in her first minute of action in the green-and-white.
The London, England native wasn't finished, adding her second goal of the season in her second game. After coming on as a substitution at West Florida, May added another goal, this time from
Payten Pearson, and also in the first minute on the field.
Against the States
The Lady Statesmen will face a team from Tennessee for the first time in 2012 when they host Union University on Friday. Overall, the Lady Statesmen are 11-18-0 against the “Volunteer State.” This will be the first of four matches against the state of Tennessee this season.
The Lady Statesmen are 0-2-0 against the state of Alabama this season after last week's loss to West Alabama. Delta State is 5-27-1 all time against the “Yellowhammer State” heading into this weeks matchup vs North Alabama, which will be the third of five contests this season against the state.
