Lady Statesmen Soccer Claims First Conference Victory with 2-1 Win Over Chargers

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Delta State University women's soccer team snatched a big conference win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday night. Delta State improves to 3-5-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in Gulf South Conference play, while Alabama-Huntsville drops to 3-6-1 overall and 1-4-0 in conference play.

This match was an important win for the Lady Statesmen as it was their first conference win of the season. Delta State has fought hard in their tough conference matchups and finally pulled out a big win against the Chargers.

The Lady Statesmen hit the pitch in Huntsville, Ala. to take on the Chargers of Alabama-Huntsville in conference action. Delta State's Lauren May put the Lady Statesmen on the board first on a goal that was crossed to the middle of the box from Tabitha Hayden to give the Green-and-White the 1-0 lead at the 40:33 mark to head into the half.

Early in the second half, in the 50th minute of play, Delta State's Tabitha Hayden extended the Lady Statesmen lead to 2-0 with a goal passed from Payten Pearson. The Chargers cut the lead in half at the 75:49 mark to keep the game interesting with just under 15 minutes to play with the score 2-0.

The Lady Statesmen were able to hold off the Chargers to capture their third win of the season and first conference win.

Delta State outshot Alabama-Huntsville by a wide 18-9 margin as well as 9-5 in shots on goal. Seven different Lady Statesmen contributed to the shot column. May led the way with four shots, three on goal, and one goal. Hayden added three shots, one on goal, and one goal. Tais Cota recorded four shots, Payten Pearson with three, Meredith Wilkes with two, and Erin Tucker and Kailey Bryan with one shot each.

Megan Galloway was in goal for the Green-and-White as she was able to stop the Charger's offensive attack with three saves.

Delta State returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 13 in Jackson, Tenn. to take on Gulf South Conference opponent Union University. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
