Lady Statesmen Soccer Falls 1-0 to Union

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Delta State University women's soccer team hit the pitch in Jackson, Tenn., to face Gulf South Conference opponent Union University on Sunday afternoon. The Lady Statesmen fell to the Lady Bulldogs 1-0 to drop to 3-7-1 on the season and 1-3-1 in conference play, while Union improved to 4-3-3 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play.

The Green-and-White entered this match coming off a big 2-1 conference win over Alabama-Huntsville.

The Lady Statesmen fell behind early in the match as Union found the back of the net just four minutes into the match to set the score at 1-0 in favor of the Lady Bulldogs. The 41 remaining minutes in the first half were scoreless on both sides of the ball to keep the score at 1-0 going into the half.

The offensive attack for both teams struggled in the second half as the last 45 minutes of the match saw no scoring from Delta State or Union. The lone goal for Union was enough to seal the win and gain the conference victory over Delta State.

The Green-and-White was outshot 13-9 and 7-1 in shots on goal in favor of Union. Six Lady Statesmen recorded one shot each, while Payten Pearson led the way with three shots.

Megan Galloway was in goal Delta State and suffered the loss. She played all 90 minutes and grabbed six saves while allowing just one goal.

Delta State returns to play on Oct. 18 at Delta Field in Cleveland, Miss., against Shorter University (Ga.). Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
