Swimming sweeps Henderson State in pool, pick up first wins of the season

ARKADELPHIA, Ark -
After facing a tough schedule to start this season, with a pair of Division I teams and the defending Division II national champions, Delta State picked up wins by with the Statesmen and Lady Statesmen in a meet at Henderson State. The Statesmen picked up the narrow 123-120 victory, while the Lady Statesmen dominated the host, 147-80.

The Statesmen picked up a win in the first event, the 200-Medley Relay, to start the meet off on a good note and then withstood a rally late to hold on to the narrow victory.  The relay team of Yvan Nys, Clayton Boyd, Vlad Zinca, and Bear Iles finished off the opening event in the time of 1:35.83 to edge the top team from HSU.

Bryce Anderson (9:50.57) and Rhett Guinot (10:12.36) took second and third in the 1,000-Freestyle in the first individual event of the meet, setting Delta State up for a strong performance all day long.  Fabrice Wendel (1:46.16) claimed the first solo win in the 200-Freestyle, while Iles (21.49) took the victory in the 50-Freestyle.

Conner Bennett (271.20; 226.80) and Matthew Swaine (268.40; 226.55) took first and second in the diving from both the 1-Meter and 3-Meter heights.

Wendel picked up another individual victory, this time in the 100-Butterfly (51.56) where he beat Iles (52.75) to give DSU another one-two finish.  Nys (51.73) claimed the win in the 100-Backstroke.

The Lady Statesmen never trailed in the meet, also taking the victory in the opening 200-Medley Relay (1:50.73) with the team of Kierstin Page, Kirsten Stroven, Danielle Dugas, and Chloe Bennett.

Maria Torres (10:40.17) and Kim Barna (10:46.75) took the top two spots in the 1,000-Freestyle, while Melanie Tombers (1:56.56) and Dani Meerholz (1:56.63) took the top two spots in the 200-Freestyle.  Hannah Core (24.65) won the 50-Freestyle.

Tombers (4:29.53) and Page (4:36.69) finished as the top two in the 400-Individual Medley, a week after setting two of the top-3 times in school history.

Cherlyn Wilhelm (136.40) was runner-up in the 1-M diving competition in her first meet of the season.  Chloe Bennett (53.87) won the 100-Freestyle while Page (58.83) took another victory in the 100-Backstroke.

The Lady Statesmen swept the top-4 finishing positions in the 500-Freestyle with Tombers (5:07.56) claiming the top spot followed by Torres, Meerholz, and Elizabeth Frye.

Stroven (1:07.34) edged Erin Newman (1:09.09) for the top spot in the 100-Breaststroke in the final individual event of the day.
