Statesmen defeat Arkansas-Monticello in midweek test 9-5

Box Score MONTICELLO, Ark. – The No. 1 Delta State Baseball team defeated the University of Arkansas at Monticello Tuesday afternoon 9-5, extending the Statesmen's (11-0) unbeaten streak to 11 games to start the 2013 season.

Ben Kingsley added a pair of RBIs and Tyler Aldridge scored two runs to lead the offensive output for the Statesmen. Every Statesmen in the starting lineup reached base safely in the game.

The top-ranked Statesmen put up two runs in the top of the first inning. After reaching base on a fielder's choice, Tyler Aldridge came around to score on a base hit from Ben Kingsley. Kingsley then scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly from Sam Kidd.

Arkansas-Monticello (9-6) got one run back in the bottom of the first, as leadoff hitter Taylor Eaves doubled and later came around to score.

The Statesmen added runs in the third and fifth innings. After Aldridge scored with a leadoff double in the third, he scored on a sacrifice fly from Kingsley. In the fifth inning, Jordan Chovanec scored off Kingsley's second sacrifice fly of the game.

Monticello scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the lead to 4-3.

In the top of the sixth inning, the Statesmen opened up their lead, scoring five runs. Sam Kidd led off the inning with a double to right center. After Brent Langston was hit by a pitch, Carlos Leal doubled to center, scoring Kidd.

Jami Rachal was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Kasey Hinton followed with a single to score Langston. Hinton, Rachal and Leal all scored on Chovanec's sacrifice fly. Rachal and Leal scored on a throwing error.

In the bottom of the sixth, Johnny Wolf scored on an error, after a single from Eaves for the Weevils. Monticello added another run in the eighth inning, when Weaves singled to score D'Marco Poindexter, cutting the lead to 9-5.

Jordan Moore picked up the win, improving to 2-0 on the season. Moore pitched 4.1 innings, striking out six Boll Weevils hitters. He gave up three runs, two earned, in the outing.

Garrett Pickens picked up the save, his second of the season. In four outings on the year, Pickens is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 5.1 innings pitched.

Delta State will return to action Wednesday afternoon with a game against Harding. The Statesmen and Bisons are scheduled for first pitch at 1 p.m. at Jerry Moore Field in Searcy, Ark.
