Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The No.2 Delta State University Statesmen Baseball team picked up a series sweep of Chritian Brothers University with a 9-4 victory Sunday afternoon.
The sweep is the first for the Statesmen (20-4, 7-2 Gulf South Conference) against a GSC opponent this season and puts Delta State atop the GSC Standings.
After a strong offensive showing Saturday, the Statesmen didn't let up as Delta State scored three runs in the top of the first.
Jordan Chovanec drew a leadoff walk and
Sam Kidd followed it up with a single.
Tyler Aldridge picked up an RBI as Chovanec scored on a groundout to the right side.
Michael Vinson followed it up with a walk and
Ben Kingsley took his place at first on a fielder's choice play. With Kidd on third, Kingsley stole second base. As Ryan Logan made the throw to second, Kidd broke for and stole home to give the Statesmen a 2-0 lead. Kingsley later advance to third on a wild pitch and took home on a passed ball.
The Statesmen performed the double steal twice in the game, also doing it with Chovanec and Aldridge in the fourth inning.
Christian Brothers (6-17, 0-9 GSC) scored in the bottom of the first after the Statesmen tagged out Tyler Burnett who was caught in a pickoff play on first. Jarrett Jenkins was on third and took home as Burnett was in the rundown.
In the second, Delta State added two more. Following
Josh Crowdus' single and then stealing second, Chovanec doubled to deep center field, scoring Crowdus. Aldridge then had his second RBI of the game when Chovanec scored on a single from Aldridge. With the hit, Aldridge extended his hitting streak to 24 games.
The Statesmen scored one run in the fourth and fifth innings while starter
Jordan Moore limited Christian Brothers offense. Moore pitched 4.2 innings, giving up the one run in the first on six hits and three walks, while striking out three.
In the fifth inning, Kingsley reached base with a single to center field.
Brent Langston followed with a double down the left field line and Kingsley scored on the play from first, giving the Statesmen a 7-1 victory.
Aldridge scored the remaining two runs for the Statesmen in the eighth and ninth innings. Aldridge led off the eighth inning with a single and a stolen base before taking home on a double from
Kasey Hinton. In the ninth, Aldridge hit a two out double to left field and scored on
Ricky Velez's single in the next at bat.
Every Statesmen to have a plate appearance Sunday reached base safely at least once. Chovanec, Aldridge, and Kingsley all put together three hit performances. Chovanec scored three runs in the game and Aldridge and Kingsley each had two runs scored.
The Statesmen will return to action Tuesday with a midweek game at Mississippi Valley State before hosting Harding on Wednesday. Delta State will return to Gulf South Conference action Saturday at No.9 Alabama-Huntsville, who currently sit second in the GSC Standings at 6-2.
