Box Score MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Senior right-hander
Jordan Moore struck out five and allowed just one run in 6.0 innings pitched to lead the No. 1 ranked Delta State University baseball team to an 8-1 come-from-behind victory over No. 30 Southern Arkansas University Tuesday, March 5 at Mulerider Field. The Statesmen moved to 14-2 on the season while the Muleriders slipped to 14-7.
After D. Harris put SAU up 1-0 with an RBI double to right-center, the Statesmen had their work cutout for them versus Mulerider starter Timothy Buchanan.
It took DSU top the top of the third to finally get on the board, as
Jordan Chovanec singled to center to plate
Kasey Hinton, who singled and stole second to get into scoring position, and tie the game at 1-1.
The Statesmen broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, plating five runs on four hits to take a 6-1 lead.
Josh Crowdus brought home the first run of the frame, as his bunt attempt allowed
Michael Vinson, who singled and moved around to third on Hinton's second single of the game, came in to score. With Hinton at second and Crowdus at first, a hit-by-pitch to Chovanec loaded the bases for
Tyler Aldridge, who blasted a two-RBI double to left-center that extended his hitting streak to 16 games.
Sam Kidd and
Brent Langston also delivered RBI singles for DSU.
Moore (2-0), who settled down after the first, worked 5.0 consecutive scoreless innings and turned the game over to the bullpen. The trio of
Ricky Winters,
Drew Milligan and
Garrett Pickens worked the next 3.0 innings, one each, to nail down the victory for the Statesmen.
In the top of the seventh,
Ben Kingsley drove in the seventh run of the game to put DSU up 7-1.
Vinson doubled to left to jumpstart the top of the eighth inning for DSU. After a walk to Hinton, the Statesmen attempted a double steal and a throwing error by SAU catcher Ryan Dardenne allowed Vinson to score the insurance run and put the game out of reach 8-1.
Buchanan (1-1) took the loss for SAU after working 4.1 innings and allowing five runs on four hits. Jansen Carr and Blake Sullivan also worked in relief for the Muleriders.
DSU finished the contest with eight runs on eight hits with an error. Vinson, Chovanec and Hinton led the Statesmen with two hits each, while Aldridge paced the club with two RBIs.
SAU scored one run on a mere four hits with six errors.
The Statesmen will return to Ferriss Field for a three game series this weekend versus long-time Gulf South Conference for the University of North Alabama. Saturday's doubleheader will begin at 12 p.m. with a single game Sunday at 2 p.m.
