Statesmen sweep Saturday's doubleheader, defeating Union 2-1 in game two of the series

Box Score JACKSON, Tenn. – The Delta State University Statesmen held off a late rally attempt from Union at Fesmire Field to defeat the Bulldogs 2-1 and sweep Saturday's doubleheader.

The Statesmen (29-5-1, 14-2-1 Gulf South Conference) scored both of their runs in the second inning. Carlos Leal and Jami Rachal led off the inning with back-to-back singles to right and Kasey Hinton drew a walk to load the bases.

After a strikeout, Jordan Chovanec singled to shallow left, scoring Leal. Sam Kidd followed up with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Rachal.

Colton Mitchell held Union scoreless into the sixth inning. Union (7-27, 2-17 GSC) scored one run credited to Mitchell after he was pulled for Taylor Stark who came in with two outs in the inning. Stark gave up a hit that scored one run, but Sam Kidd made a great through to third base and Aldridge applied the tag to get the Statesmen out of the jam.

Mitchell gave up one run on two hits and four walks, while striking out five. Mitchell improves to 5-1 on the season.

In the seventh, Stark hit a batter and was unable to get the lead runner on a bunt attempt to put Bulldogs on first and second. However, Stark picked up a strikeout, before forcing a fly out to left and a ground out to first to end the game.

Stark pitched 1.1 innings, giving up one hit en route to his fourth save of the season.

Delta State will look for the series sweep tomorrow with the third and final game scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
