Statesmen use come from behind rally and 10th inning run to beat Ouachita Baptist 4-3

Box Score CLEVELAND - The Delta State University Baseball team came from behind and then used a run in the 10th inning to defeat Ouachita Baptist 4-3 Tuesday night in Arkadelphia, Ark.

Trailing 3-1, the Statesmen scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to tie the game. With two outs, Michael Vinson reached base with a hit by pitch. Brent Langston followed it up with a double to left field, scoring Vinson all the way from first base.

Ben Pickard then singled to right center, scoring Langston to tie the game at three.

In the tenth, Ben Kingsley and Vinson each had one-out singles to put the Statesmen on first and third. With Langston at the plate, Keegan Ghidotti's pitch got passed the catcher Chris Tavares and Kingsley was able to take home on the play.

Delta State took the lead early with a run in the first inning. Jordan Chovanec led off the game with a single and then advanced to second on a bunt single by Sam Kidd. Following a pair of fly outs, Vinson singled to left, scoring Chovanec from second.

Taylor Stark picked up the win for the Statesmen, pitching 2.2 innings in relief. Stark improved to 2-0 on the season after giving up just two hits, while striking out one.

Garrett Pickens earned his second save of the season, pitching a scoreless tenth inning. Pickens gave up a pair of walks in the inning and recorded a strikeout.

Travis Northern started the game for the Statesmen, pitching 4.1 innings. Ouachita Baptist scored three runs on Northern, plating one in the second and two unearned runs in the third.Northern gave up six hits and the one earned run.

Ricky Winters pitched two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just three walks, with one strikeout.

Chovanec and Vinson each had three hit games for the Statesmen. Chovanec finished 3-for-5 with a run scored. Vinson was 3-for-4 at the plate, with a run scored, a RBI and a stolen base. Kingsley also had a multi-hit game with two hits and the winning run scored.

The Statesmen will return to the diamond tomorrow for the second game against the Tigers. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Arkadelphia, Ark.
