Statesmen wrap up midweek series with 5-4 win over Ouachita Baptist

Box Score ARKADELPHIA, Ark. - The Delta State University Statesmen Baseball team defeated Ouachita Baptist 5-4 Wednesday afternoon to wrap up the two-game midweek series between the programs with a Delta State sweep.

The Statesmen (32-5-1) scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie and added an insurance run that proved to be the game winner in the seventh.

Michael Vinson walked to lead off the sixth inning and Jami Rachal followed with a single to center field after an out. Following a pitching change, Carlos Leal singled to right field, scoring Vinson on the play. Kasey Hinton then singled to right center, scoring Rachal.

In the seventh, Tyler Aldridge reached on an error and later came around to score on a Ben Kingsley single, putting the Statesmen up 5-2.

Ouachita Baptist (19-21-1) answered with a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning. The Tigers scored one on a base hit with two runners on, but the Statesmen got out of a jam after forcing the Tigers into a double play to end the inning.

In the ninth inning, the Tigers had another chance and scored one more run. With a pair of runners on, the Tigers were able to cut the Statesmen lead to one with an error by Hinton at second. However, Garrett Pickens ame in and picked up the save by forcing a 6-4-3 double play to end the game with a runner on third.

The Statesmen took the lead in the second inning with a pair of runs. Kingsley started off the inning with a single and then scored in the next at bat when Rachal tripled to right field. Rachal then used his speed to beat out a throw home on a ball put in play by Hinton, giving the Statesmen a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Tigers answered back with a pair of unearned runs on Delta State starter Jordan Moore. After the bases were loaded with an error and a walk, a two-out double tied the game.

Moore picked up the win, improving to 4-1 on the year. Moore gave up the two unearned runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out five.

The Statesmen will return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against West Georgia. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Ferriss Field
