CLEVELAND - The Delta State University Statesmen Baseball team closed out the home portion of the 2012-13 regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Henderson State 6-3 and 4-1.
The Statesmen (37-5-1) used a four-run inning in the fifth to propel past the Reddies in game one. After a
Jordan Chovanec walk and a
Tyler Aldridge single,
Ben Kingsley hit his fifth homerun of the season to break a 2-2 tie.
Michael Vinson then singled and later scored on a
Brent Langston single to cap the four-run inning.
Delta State originally took the lead in the bottom of the first with a Vinson single to score
Sam Kidd, who reached earlier in the inning on a fielder's choice.
After a two-run inning by Henderson State (22-23) in the top of the third, the Statesmen tied the game in the third inning with a Kingsley RBI single that scored Aldridge, who had just reached base with a triple in the previous at bat.
Drew Milligan picked up the win for the Statesmen in the game, improving to 2-1 on the season. Milligan pitched 3.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits.
Garrett Pickens earned his fourth save of the season, pitching the final two outs of the game.
Travis Northern started the game for the Statesmen. Northern pitched three innings, giving up two runs on five hits, while striking out two.
In game two, the Statesmen broke a 1-1 tie with another fifth inning burst of runs.
Dex Herrington and Chovanec each reached base with walks to start the inning. Kasey Hinto then reached on a bunt single to load the bases. All three then advanced a base on a wild pitch, as Herrington scored to give Delta State the lead.
Following a Kidd walk to load the bases again, the Statesmen added another run as Chovanec scored on a fielder's choice and Hinton scored on a fielding error as
Sam Kidd was out at second base and the throw from the shortstop got passed first base.
Henderson State took the lead in the second inning with a two-out rally to lead to a run.
Delta State tied the game with a run in the fourth inning. Aldridge scored on a fielder's choice ball in play from
Ricky Velez. Aldridge reached base earlier in the inning with a single.
Taylor Stark picked up the win in relief, pitching the final 2.2innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. Stark allowed just one hit and didn't give up a walk, while striking out one to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Cody McGill started the game for the Statesmen and pitched 4.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and a walk. McGill set a career high seven strikeouts in the game.
The Statesmen will return to action Friday with a single game at Valdosta State before playing a doubleheader on Saturday.
