Manley throws one-hit gem in doubleheader split with Valdosta State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VALDOSTA, Ga. - Michael Manley threw a one hit, complete game gem in the Delta State University Baseball team's doubleheader split with Valdosta State on Saturday.

The junior pitcher gave up one hit in the third inning and three walks over nine innings to help propel the Statesmen (38-7-1, 19-4-1 GSC) to a game one victory.

Manley had three strikeouts in the game and forced Valdosta (29-15, 14-10 GSC) into 10 groundouts, including two double plays that erased walks in the previous at bats.

Ben Kingsley hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the top of the first to give the Statesmen the lead. Kingsley also led off the sixth inning with a homerun to put Delta State up 2-0.

Delta State capitalized with two more insurance runs in the ninth, taking advantage of a throwing error on a Jordan Chovanec bunt single. Carlos Leal and Josh Crowdus scored on the play. Chovanec scored the first run of the game on Kingsley's sacrifice fly.

Manley improved to 7-0 on the season and lowered his era to 2.39.

In game two, Colton Mitchell and Ricky Winters gave up nine runs in the third inning to fall behind Valdosta in a 12-1 loss.

Ricky Velez was the only run for the Statsmen in the game, hitting a deep homerun to left center in the late innings. It was the first baseman's first home run as a Statesmen.

Mitchell picked up the loss, falling to 6-2 on the season after giving up six runs on six hits in 2.1 innings pitched. Winters gave up the final three runs in the nine-run inning.

The Statesmen will now set their sights on the GSC Tournament next week in Chattanooga, Tenn. Delta State will be the top seed and face Christian Brothers in the first round at AT&T Park on Thursday.
