CLEVELAND - The No. 1 Delta State University Statesmen Baseball team defeated Shorter University Sunday afternoon 4-1, completing the three-game sweep of the Hawks at Ferriss Field.
Shorter (12-23, 7-9 Gulf South Conference) went ahead early, scoring a run in the first inning. Darrius Jennings reached base after being hit by a Manley pitch and came around to score from first on a Walker Borneman double to deep center.
Delta State (27-4-1, 12-2-1 GSC) tied the game up at one in the fourth inning when
Carlos Leal picked up his first of two RBIs on the day with a sacrifice fly to left center field that scored
Tyler Aldridge from third.
The top-ranked Statesmen took the lead in the sixth inning with a pair of runs.
Sam Kidd started the inning with a double and Aldridge followed it up with a single to put runners on the corners.
Michael Vinson hit a high chopper to the right side, allowing Kidd to score easily on the play.
Ben Kingsley followed it up with a hard hit line drive down the left field line that scored Aldridge from second.
Delta State added an insurance run in the eighth when Leal picked up his second RBI of the game on a single to right field, scoring Vinson from second.
Michael Manley improved to 5-0 on the season, pitching a complete game for the Statesmen. Manley limited Shorter to the one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out nine.
Manley's nine strikeouts continues the junior's impressive run on the mound this season. The Raymond, Miss. native has had atleast seven strikeouts in each of his six starts this season and has a team high 56 strikeouts in eight appearances.
Delta State will return to action Wednesday night as No. 16 Southern Arkansas comes to Ferriss Field for a mid week contest. The game is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
