Statesmen fall in extra innings to Valdosta State 6-5

Box Score CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Delta State Baseball dropped a heartbreaker Friday night to Valdosta State in extra innings 6-5.
 
After the Statesmen (39-8-1) took a lead in the top of the 10th inning, Valdosta State (31-15) scored a pair of unearned runs on three errors in the bottom of the inning to defeat the Statesmen.
 
Delta State took an early lead, scoring a pair of runs in the first. Delta State loaded the bases and Michael Vinson picked up an RBI walk to score the first run. Delta State then added another run when Kasey Hinton reached with a bases loaded hit by pitch.
 
Statesmen starter Michael Manley and Valdosta State starter Jeremy Holcomb then limited each team's baserunners through the first six innings, as both teams were held scoreless.
 
In the seventh, Delta State added another run. Tyler Aldridge started the inning with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Ricky Velez. Aldridge then stole third and took home as the throw from Bryant Hayman went to the outfield.
 
The Statesmen took a 4-0 lead in the eighth inning with a double by Sam Kidd to score Josh Crowdus who reached earlier in the inning.
 
Valdosta put up a four-run inning in the bottom of the eight to tie the game.
 
After an error and with two runners on, Nick Rodda hit a two-out single to score the first run for the Blazers. After a walk loaded the bases, Hayman hit a double to clear the bases and tie the game.
 
Manley finished with a no decision in 7.2 innings pitched. He allowed four runs, all unearned, on three hits and two walks. Manley had eight strikeouts in the game.
 
The Statesmen will play West Florida in an elimination game scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at Chattanooga State Community College in an off site game.
