CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's soccer team defeated the University of West Alabama in exciting fashion on Sunday afternoon at Delta Field. The Lady Statesmen beat the Tigers 1-0 in double overtime to improve to 1-3 on the season, while West Alabama falls to 2-2 overall.
The offensive game for both teams was solid throughout the entire match. Delta State and West Alabama combined for 34 shots and 13 shots on goal. However, with strong defensive efforts from both sides, the Lady Statesmen and Tigers could not seem to execute. The score at the end of regulation was 0-0, forcing the first overtime.
West Alabama managed to get three shots off in the first overtime, while Delta State only managed one. Neither team was able to find the back of the net, which led to a second overtime. After 100 scoreless minutes of play, the second overtime was enforced. The lone goal of the match came from Delta State's Charlotte Benson in the 113th minute of play, to give the Lady Statesmen the win. The goal was a result of a corner kick from senior Meredith Wilkes.
Delta State outshot West Alabama by a wide 20-14 margin. Megan Galloway was in goal for the Lady Statesmen. She played all 113 minutes and recorded five saves without allowing a goal, to contribute to Delta State's win and shutout.
Up next for the Delta State women's soccer team is a conference matchup against the Valdosta State University Lady Blazers on Friday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Delta Field in Cleveland.
