CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Lady Statesmen soccer team of Delta State University continued Gulf South Conference play with West Georgia on Sunday afternoon at Delta Field. The Lady Statesmen fell to the Wolves 3-2 to drop to 1-4-1 on the season and 0-1-1 in conference play, while West Georgia improves to 2-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Sunday's match was the second straight Gulf South Conference matchup in two days for Delta State. The Lady Statesmen entered the West Georgia game after drawing with Valdosta the day before.
West Georgia's Myra Fisher put the Wolves on the board first 23 minutes into the match to give West Georgia the early lead 1-0. Just three minutes later, the Wolves added to their lead to go up 2-0 over Delta State. That was not all from the Wolves in the first half. Another West Georgia goal in the 38th minute gave the Wolves a commanding 3-0 advantage over the Lady Statesmen going into half time. Delta State was shutout in the first 45 minutes of play to face some adversity going into the second half, trailing 3-0.
The Lady Statesmen did not go down without a fight. Delta State scored two goals in the 55th minute of play within 30 seconds of each other. Delta State's Erin Tucker put the Lady Statesmen back in the game with a goal on a pass from Payten Pearson. With the Lady Statesmen trailing just 3-1, freshman Tabitha Hayden put Delta State within reach on an unassisted goal to trail 3-2. West Georgia held the 3-2 lead through the end of regulation to claim the win over Delta State.
The Lady Statesmen outshot the Wolves 15 to 10 and the two squads were even in shots on goal with eight each. Pearson recorded four shots for Delta State with two shots on goal and one assist. Lauren May followed suit with three shots and two shots on goal. Megan Galloway was in goal for Delta State as she recorded five saves and allowed three goals.
Up next for the Lady Statesmen is a nonconference matchup against Millsaps College on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at Delta Field. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
