Women's Soccer Records 28 Shots in 3-2 Win Over Millsaps

CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Delta State University women's soccer team hit the pitch on Wednesday afternoon to face off against the Majors of Millsaps College. The Lady Statesmen came out of the match victorious with a 3-2 win over Millsaps to improve to 2-4-1 on the season, while Millsaps drops to 3-6 overall.

Delta State controlled the tempo of the game for the entire first half of play as they shutout Millsaps 2-0 going into the half. Delta State's Kailey Bryan scored the first goal for the Lady Statesmen, her first of the season, at the 12:28 mark on a pass from Lauren Hale to give Delta State the early 1-0 lead. Just seven minutes later, Delta State struck again on an unassisted goal by Erin Tucker to put the Lady Statesmen up 2-0 over Millsaps. The score leaned in Delta State's favor going into halftime 2-0.

The Lady Statesmen came out firing in the second half as Bryan scored her second goal of the game and the season in the 49th minute of play on a pass from Tabitha Hayden for Delta State to take a powerful 3-0 advantage over the Majors. Millsaps' Taylor Winslow spoiled the shutout with a goal in the 65th minute to cut Delta States lead to 3-1. Five minutes later, Millsaps scored again, and just like that the Majors were back in the game with less than twenty minutes to play with the score 3-2 in favor of Delta State. The Lady Statesmen looked for an insurance goal as they got nine shots off in the last nineteen minutes of play but could not find the back of the net. The 3-2 lead was enough for the Lady Statesmen to earn the win over Millsaps.

Delta State outshot Millsaps by a wide 28-11 margin with twelve shots on goal to Millsaps' nine. Four different Lady Statesmen recorded at least five shots for the Green-and-White. Lauren May and Kailey Bryan had six shots apiece, while Erin Tucker and Tabitha Hayden added five shots each. Megan Galloway was in goal for Delta State as she was in the net for all 90 minutes of play and recorded seven saves while giving up two goals.

Up next for the Delta State is a matchup with Harding University on Sunday, Sept. 29. The Lady Statesmen will compete at Delta Field in Delta State double-header action as the men's soccer team will also play. The Lady Statesmen will kickoff with Harding at 1:00 p.m., while the men's soccer team will take on Union University at 3:30 p.m.
