Women's Soccer Falls in Season Opener

CLINTON, Miss. - The Delta State University Lady Statesmen soccer team fell, on Thursday afternoon, to Mississippi College by a score of 4-1.

The Lady Choctaws of Mississippi College jumped out to an early lead with a goal in the 12th minute by Kaitlyn Kiss. Then in the 38th minute, Caitlin Chapman scored to put the Lady Choctaws up 2-0.

The Lady Statesmen struck back in the 40th minute on a strike by Erin Tucker. That cut the lead down to one goal but that was as close as Delta State would get, at 2-1

In the second half, the Lady Choctaws extended the lead on a goal by Lauren Prescott in the 71st minute and then sealed the win with a goal on a penalty kick by Macey Lee, who also had an assist on the night.

Brianna Blackwell picked up the win in goal for Mississippi College making three saves while freshman Kylie Jones received the loss for Delta State, making three saves and allowing four goals.

It was an emotional night for the Lady Choctaws, playing 24 hours after hearing of the sudden passing of teammate Ashley Greenway Wednesday afternoon.

The Lady Statesmen will return to action at home on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 3 p.m., as they take on Belhaven University at Delta Field in Cleveland.
