Lady Statesmen and Badgers Battle to 2-2 Draw in Double Overtime

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – Sunday afternoon represented Senior Day for two Delta State Lady Statesmen soccer players, Kellie Hendle and Kayla Kazanowski. Delta State played to a 2-2 draw with Spring Hill College.

In the quickest scoring attack by Delta State all season, Erin Tucker gave the Lady Statesmen the early 1-0 lead over the Badgers with just 31 seconds off the game clock. The unassisted goal marked Tucker's third tally of the season.

At the 14:18 mark, a Delta State foul in the penalty box forced a penalty kick for Spring Hill. The made PK represented the equalizer and notched the score at one all.

Just ten minutes later, Tais Cotta found Kailey Bryan on the far post inside the 18-yard box who struck the ball away to the top right corner of the net. This put the lead in DSU's possession for the second time.

Delta State's advantage held until three minutes were left in the first half. SHC's Francesca Talotta scored the second equalizer of the match to tie the game going into the half.

Four combined goals in the first half and none in the second led to extra time. After 20 minutes of overtime, the score still remained tied 2-2, forcing the draw.

Two headers for Delta State were close to being converted when Bailey Saebi and Tucker were inside the six-yard box, but the shots went high.

Spring Hill owned the advantage in shots, 15-8, and shots on goal 10-3. Tucker led the way for the Lady Statesmen with three shots and one goal, while Cotta added two shots, one on-goal, and one assist.

Katie Swaine was in goal for the entire 110 minutes for Delta State. Swaine allowed two goals but grabbed eight saves.

The Green-and-White return to the pitch on Tuesday, Oct. 28 to face off against Union University. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Delta Field.
