JUPITER, Fla. - The Delta State University baseball team opened the season with a 4-2 loss to host Palm Beach Atlantic from Roger Dean Stadium, Spring Training home for both the Miami Marlins and the St. Louis Cardinals.
Delta State (0-1) fell behind 4-0 after two innings were a trio of errors lead to four unearned runs against starter
Drew Milligan. Milligan pitched four innings of four-hit ball while striking out one batter and walking a pair.
Jonathan Andrews drove in the first Statesmen run in the fifth inning, driving in
Dex Herrington on a fielder's choice - Herrington had earlier singled to centerfield.
Casey Greene would enter to start the fifth and would finish the game, going four innings while yielding five hits and striking out four batters.
The Statesmen added another run in the top of the sixth inning when
Kasey Hinton scored on a
Brent Langston RBI single to centerfield.
Greene shut the Sailfish down the rest of the way, but PBA was able to use a trio of relievers to solidify the win for Kennie Silvestri. Milligan was stuck with the loss after a solid outing.
Delta State will return to action tomorrow at 1pm Eastern, 12 noon Central, for Game Two of the weekend series with Palm Beach Atlantic.
