JUPITER, Fla. - Delta State Baseball drop the final game of the three game series versus Palm Beach Atlantic, 6-4, after the two team split the series opening games on Friday and Saturday.
The scoring started for Delta State (1-2) when
Jordan Chovanec lead the game off with a double.Â
Kasey Hinton picked up the RBI with Chovanec scoring on an infield single after he advanced to third on a balk.
Nick Goza (0-1) got the start on the mound for the Statesmen, retiring the Sailfish 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first.
Palm Beach Atlantic (2-2) scored four times in the bottom of the third inning, only one run was earned, to take the lead 4-1.Â
Witt Haggard replaced Goza in the inning on the mound - Goza pitched 2.2 innings giving up four runs and striking out two while yielding just a trio of hits.
DSU rallied to score twice in the fifth inning, Chovanec scoring on a Hinton infield single after a triple to the left center field gap. Hinton later scored on a hit-and-run with
Carlos Leal doubling down the right field line.
The scoring threat for Palm Beach Atlantic was halted when
Dex Herrington threw out Andres Vazquez at the plate after Spencer Castro singled past second base for the third out of the fifth inning. PBA plated a pair of runs in the sixth inning extending the lead back to three runs, 6-3.
DSU countered with a run in the seventh after
Benji Sullivan tripled to lead off the inning and was brought in to score on a Chovanec single.
Dominic Monda picked up the two inning save, his second of the series, facing just eight batters after he replaced Eric Russell after the seventh inning.
Delta State opens the home portion of the season with a game on February 12 against Harding from Ferriss Field at 3pm. West Alabama will visit Cleveland for the Gulf South Conference opening series over the weekend, beginning February 15 and noon.
