SEARCY, Ark. - Delta State Baseball picked up the mid-week victory in non-conference road action by defeating Harding, 3-1, behind a strong outing on the mound by
Ricky Winters.
The game was scoreless through five innings, until
Ricky Velez picked up a two RBI single that scored
Landon Thibodeaux and
Jordan Chovanec.
Winters (5-0) took the mound in the sixth and gave up a lead-off single to Kyler Offenbacker for the first hit of the game allowed by the Statesmen starter. Winters would finish the inning and call it a day after going six innings of one-hit baseball, striking out seven and walking just one.
Chovanec drove in an insurance run in the seventh inning when
Kasey Hinton scored from second base on a single through the left side of the infield.
Witt Haggard would become the second DSU pitcher and would go 1.2 innings, picking up three strike outs before coach
Mike Kinnison brought in the Statesmen closer,
Taylor Stark, for the four out save.
Stark would allow a hit to Offenbacker before recording the final out of the eight on a fielder's choice to the shortstop.
Delta State (13-6, 11-3 GSC) would be set down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning. Stark would battle through the home part of the ninth and hold on to pick up his third save of the season and preserve the 3-1 road victory. Statesmen pitching totaled 11 strike outs while surrendering just five hits and a pair of walks.
Alabama-Huntsville will visit Ferriss Field for a GSC weekend series, with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 3 pm, with the game on Sunday set to begin at 2 pm.
