Box Score
CLEVELAND, Miss. - After falling behind by a pair of runs early, despite outhitting the opposition, No. 18 Delta State baseball was able to rally with a pair of late inning runs to win in walk-off fashion versus No. 12 Alabama in Huntsville, 3-2.
Ricky Winters took the mound for his second start of the week, he previously went 6.0 innings in a mid-week start at Harding, and lasted 8.0 innings today. Winters gave up a pair of runs, one run in the first and third innings, while striking out a pair and allowing nine hits. Winters was also charged for a pair of throwing errors on back-to-back plays in the fourth inning that could have provided the Chargers with a rally if it was not a slick fielding play by
Ricky Velez at first base. Velez fielded a hard hit ground ball with runners on first and second and tossed across the diamond for the force out at third base. The Statesmen then caught Chris Brown in a rundown between second and third for a double play.
Delta State (16-6, 14-3 GSC) loaded the bases in the fourth inning before the inning ended on a double play. The Statesmen threatened again in the fifth with runners on the corners but could not drive a run in.
Velez scored Delta State's first run in the sixth inning to start a Delta State rally. Velez picked up the one out single to centerfield and moved to third on a
Landon Thibodeaux single and a ground out back to the pitcher's mound.Â
Kasey Hinton picked the two out RBI with a single off the pitcher's glove that rolled away from the defense.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, Velez led off the inning with a double deep down the right field line.Â
Hunter Twitty came in to run for Velez and scored as Hinton picked up another RBI single to tie the game.
Coach
Mike Kinnison made several defensive changes to start the top of the ninth inning. Thibodeaux moved from the hot corner to left field as
Juan Rivera took the field at third base.Â
Brent Langston moved from designated hitter to first base and
Taylor Stark entered the game on the mound. Stark retired the leadoff batter for UAH (19-10, 9-6 GSC) via ground out before ending the inning with a double play.
With a pair of outs in the bottom of ninth, Langston connected for a opposite field double to right field. The Chargers issued the intentional walk to
Carlos Leal before Rivera was able to load the bases on a single through the left side of the infield.
Thibodeaux hit a high chopper off the plate that saw the pitcher and catcher collide allowing Langston to score the winning run on an infield single.
Stark (1-1) picked up the win in relief pitching the final inning, facing just three batters in the top of the ninth and allowing one hit.
Delta State outhit Alabama in Huntsville, 15-8, but three errors on the Statesmen defense put pressure on the offense to capitalize. Hinton had four hits, while Velez and Thibodeaux each tallied three hits. Langston and Leal each walked once as DSU only struck out four times in the game.
Delta State has won six consecutive games, and 10 of the last 11, and will be looking to continue the trend with a pair of mid-week home games versus Ouachita Baptist (14-15). The first game of the series is set for Tuesday, March 25 at 6:30 pm with the second game the following afternoon, March 26 at 3 pm.
