CARROLLTON, Ga. - Delta State Baseball took advantage of timely hitting and dominate pitching performances to sweep a Gulf South Conference doubleheader from West Georgia, 9-2 and 11-3. The wins extend a current winning streak to 10 games, while also extending the conference unbeaten streak to 11 games.
Game one saw
Michael Manley (6-0) go eight innings in the start, before yielding way to
Nick Goza for the ninth inning. Over eight innings, Manley gave up two runs with nine hits and five strikeouts. Goza pitched a hitless ninth, walking just one batter without allowing a run.
West Georgia struck first with a solo run in the bottom of the second inning. Delta State broke the game open in the fourth inning by scoring six runs. The Statesmen added solo runs in the fifth and sixth innings. West Georgia added a final run in the bottom of the sixth inning before Delta State added one final run in the eighth inning.
The Statesmen tallied 18 hits, one shy of the season high.
Will Robertson went 4-for-6, adding two RBI and scoring three times.
Landon Thibodeaux went 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI; while
Kasey Hinton went 3-for-6 with one RBI.
Dex Herrington,
Carlos Leal,
Brent Langston, and
Jordan Chovanec all collected two hits apiece.
Jonathan Moody (5-1) picked up the complete game in game two, pitching seven innings with seven hits and seven strikeouts to pick up the 11-3 victory.
Delta State (20-6, 16-3 GSC) scored twice in the second inning, before West Georgia (12-20, 6-10 GSC) countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning to take the 3-2 lead. The Statesmen tied the game with a run in the third inning, Moody would shut the Wolves offense down over the next five innings.
Robertson went 3-for-5 with two more RBI in game two, while
Ricky Velez went 3-for-5 with a run scored and one RBI.
Kasey Hinton, Herrington, Leal each had two hits in the game. Chovanec went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI, including his first home run of the season on a fly ball to right field that kept carrying in the breeze.
Leal was hit by a pitch four times today, twice in each game. Robertson combined to go 7-for-11 with four RBI and three runs scored. Hinton went 5-for-11 with two RBI and two runs scored from the lead off position.
The series will wrap up tomorrow with a 2 pm Eastern first pitch.
