CLEVELAND, Miss. - Delta State Baseball continued to excel in conference action, taking the opening two games in Gulf South Conference action over Christian Brothers, 8-1 and 12-0, to extend the win streak over the Bucs to 35 consecutive games.
In Game One,
Michael Manley (3-0) picked up his fourth start of the season and held the Bucs to five hits over eight innings while striking out five batters to earn his third consecutive victory over GSC opponents.
Jordan Chovanec tripled to the gap in right center and was brought home by
Kasey Hinton in the next at-bat.Â
Dex Herrington added a second run in the inning with a long home run to left field.
Delta State (9-5, 8-3 GSC) added four runs in the fourth inning on four hits.Â
Will Robertson singled to start the inning and scored from third on a one out fielder's choice off the bat of Chovanec.Â
Landon Thibodeaux moved two bases to score from second on a throwing error by the opposing shortstop before
Carlos Leal plated Chovanec with an RBI single to center field.
Robertson scored again in the seventh inning on a RBI single to left by
Benji Sullivan.
Christian Brothers (4-13, 0-8 GSC) picked up an unearned run in the eighth inning, cutting the lead to 7-1.
Herrington added his second home run of the game to left field in the bottom of the inning to complete the scoring in the opener of the doubleheader.
Robertson relieved Manley for the ninth inning and retired three of the four batters he faced for a scoreless ninth inning in the Statesmen victory.
Jonathan Moody (2-1) picked up the victory in the second game of the day when he pitched six innings of scoreless baseball with eight strikeouts. The outing and strikeout total each represented new career highs.
The Statesmen offense started the scoring in the second inning with
Hunter Twitty scoring on a Sullivan single.Â
Kasey Hinton and Leal scored in the third inning on back-to-back passed balls.Â
Brent Langston came around to score later that inning after a single to left field.
DSU scored three more times in the fourth inning, chasing the CBU starter after Leal drove in Hinton with just one out in the inning. Herrington and Velez scored off the bats of Langston and
Ricky Velez to push the lead to 7-0.
Thibodeaux scored on a Hinton RBI single before Herrington connected on a three-run home run over the fans in left field - his third of the day - giving the Statesmen a 11-0 lead after five innings.
Delta State added one more run in the sixth inning with Chovanec adding an RBI single that scored Twitty for the final run of the day.
Moody set the side down in order in first and third innings and had a stretch where he struck out four batters in a row, including three swinging.
