Statesmen Complete Sweep of Wolves on Road Behind Thibodeaux's 2 HR's, 16-10

CARROLLTON, Ga. - In a Monday afternoon series finale, Delta State Baseball took advantage of 16 hits and six errors on West Georgia to complete the season sweep on the road, 16-10.

Delta State (21-6, 17-3 GSC) scored five runs in the top of the first inning, with all five runs being unearned after West Georgia registered three errors in the inning.  Carlos Leal picked up the first RBI of the game, driving in Will Robertson.  Ben Pickard get two RBI's with a single to right center field as Leal and Dex Herrington would score.  Pickard scored, along with Landon Thibodeaux, when Jonathan Andrews reached safely on a dropped fly ball by the Wolves second baseman to make the score 5-0 after the first inning.

West Georgia (12-21, 6-11 GSC) scored twice in the bottom of the second inning to make the score 5-2.

The Statesmen scored six time in the next three innings to extend the lead to 11-2 after the DSU part of the fifth inning.

Landon Thibodeaux connected for a solo home run to left field in the third inning before Andrews was able to score on a Robertson fielder's choice.

Jordan Chovanec collected an RBI with  single into right field in the fourth that brought in Ricky Velez.

Velez scored Robertson in the fifth inning with an RBI single up the middle.  Pickard added two more RBI with a double to left center field that brought home Velez and Leal.

The Wolves chased the Statesmen starter Ricky Winters in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 11-6 before adding another run in the sixth inning to pull within three runs.  Winters pitched 4.2 innings to get a no decision, allowing eight hits and six runs to score, walking one and striking out one.  Witt Haggard (1-0) picked up the win in relief of Winters, going 2.1 innings, striking out two and walking one and only giving up two hits and two unearned runs to score.

Leal scored in the seventh on another RBI base hit from Pickard before Thibodeaux launched his second home run of the game, a three-run shot
scoring Pickard and Velez to move the score to 15-8.

Delta State added a run in the eighth inning with Andrews crossing home plate on a Herrington fielder's choice.  West Georgia scored twice in the bottom of the inning off Trevor Blocker.  Blocker pitched the eighth inning giving up three hits and two runs  while striking out a batter.

Taylor Stark pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the game by inducing three groundouts.

Eight of nine batters in the lineup for Delta State were able to get a hit against three West Georgia pitchers.

Leal, Pickard, and Thibodeaux each went 3-for-5.  Andrews added a multi-hit performance going 2-for-5 with two runs scored.  Leal, Velez, and Thibodeaux each scored three times while Robertson and Pickard also scored twice.

Pickard drove in a season-high five RBI, while Thibodeaux added four RBI.  Thibodeaux joins Herrington with a multi-home run performance, Herrington accomplished the feat on March 8 in a home game versus Christian Brothers University.

Delta State returns to Ferriss Field on April 2 hosting Arkansas-Monticello (24-10) before hosting Gulf South Conference newcomer, Lee (21-13, 9-9 GSC) for a three game series on the weekend.
