No. 6 Statesmen fight for 14-10 victory at No. 8 Southern Arkansas

MAGNOLIA, Ark. - Delta State Baseball concluded a three-game weekend series at Southern Arkansas with a  14-10 victory, winning the weekend and ending the season series with a 2-2 record.

Delta State (28-8) erupted in the second inning with 13 runs on nine hits that sent 17 batters to the plate.  Southern Arkansas needed to use three pitchers, chasing the Mulerider starter Yumezo Densaki after 1.1 innings on the mound giving up seven runs and four hits.  Jared Webb was the first reliever and was unable to record an out, with DSU scoring four times with two hits against the right-handed reliever.  The inning saw all players in the lineup cross the plate at least once.

Drew Milligan was spotted with the big lead before being lifted in the home part of the fifth inning as Southern Arkansas (30-13) closed the gap by scoring seven runs. No. 6 Delta State got back a run in the sixth inning as Jordan Chovanec delivered the RBI single to right field to drive home Will Robertson from second base.

No. 8 Southern Arkansas continued to fight back against the Statesmen bullpen, scoring three runs on two hits in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 14-10.

Nick Goza (3-1) recorded the final eight outs, including shutting down Southern Arkansas over the final two innings to earn the victory.

Delta State ended the game with 13 hits as five players recorded a pair of hits apiece in Chovanec, Ricky Velez, Ben Pickard, Robertson, and Benji Sullivan - eight on the nine batters in the lineup recorded base hits in the outing.  Robertson scored three times and Chovanec also had a trio of RBI.

Delta State will head to No. 26 Arkansas-Monticello for a mid-week game, after the Statesmen defeated the Boll Weevils 7-3 on April 1 at Ferriss Field.
