Box Score YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Delta State Baseball picked up the seventh consecutive road victory by defeating Young Harris College, 11-3. Delta State capitalized to score multiple runs in the second and fourth innings on the way to tallying 14 hits.
Young Harris jumped out to an early lead, scoring once in the first inning against Statesmen starter
Nick Goza.
Delta State (25-7) took the lead in the second inning, scoring five times.
Benji Sullivan delivered a two-out hit to left field to bring in two runners,
Landon Thibodeaux and
Brent Langston, as the bases were loaded.
Jordan Chovanec added two RBI with a single to center field that brought home
Hunter Twitty and Sullivan.
Kasey Hinton connected for a opposite field single to right field to score Chovanec from second base.
Young Harris (23-17) got a run back as Goza surrendered a home run to Dom Wyshinski.
The Statesmen added four more runs in the fourth inning to make the score 9-2. Chovanec successfully executed a sacrifice bunt to bring Twitty in from third base. Hinton followed up with an infield single to put runners on the corners as Sullivan advanced to third base. Delta State pulled off the double-steal, as Hinton broke for second base Sullivan made his way home and both runners were safe.
Dex Herrington got a RBI single to left field to score Hinton from second base. Herrington moved to second on a ground out by
Ricky Velez before advancing to third and home on back-to-back wild pitches.
Young Harris added one more run in the fifth inning, making the score 9-3. Goza (2-1) pitched five innings giving up three runs, only two of which were earned, while scattering five hits and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.
Witt Haggard went the rest of the way to pick up his first save of the season while pitching four innings of two-hit baseball while recording eight strikeouts.
Delta State added a single run in the sixth and ninth innings to complete the scoring.
Carlos Leal singled to right field to score Herrington for the tenth run of the game.
Will Robertson delivered the pinch-hit sacrifice fly to bring home
Austin McClain. McClain came into the game earlier in the inning to pinch run for after Langston singled to right center field.
The Statesmen offense received hits from eight of the nine starters in the lineup. Langston went 3-for-4 at the plate with one run scored. Delta State received two hits apiece from Chovanec, Hinton, Herrington, and Sullivan. Chovanec had three RBI while Sullivan added two RBI. Herrington, Twitty, and Sullivan each crossed home plate twice on the way to scoring 11 runs. Sullivan, Herrington, and Hinton each were successful with a stolen base.
