Six Run First Propels Statesmen Past Mountain Lions, 10-2

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - Delta State Baseball jumped out to an early lead thanks to plating six runs in the first inning to defeat Young Harris, 10-2.  The victory marked a two-game sweep for the Statesmen in the first match-up against Young Harris.

Kasey Hinton picked up the first hit of the day with a single to center field on a full count to advance Jordan Chovanec to second base after Chovanec reached on a fielding error.  Dex Herrington followed with a walk to load the bases.  Chovanec scored on a Carlos Leal fielder's choice to start the rally.  Brent Langston delivered a sacrifice fly to right field that brought home Hinton.  Herrington scored as Will Robertson reached base on a bases-loaded walk.  Landon Thibodeaux picked up the RBI single to center field bringing in Leal from third.  Benji Sullivan singled to right field to score Ben Pickard before Chovanec brought Robertson home for the sixth run of the inning.

Young Harris scored twice in the bottom of the first on three hits to cut into the Delta State advantage.

Delta State (26-7) added a single run in the second inning with Herrington scoring as Langston delivered another RBI, this time on a single up the middle.  The Statesmen would carry a 7-2 advantage to the visitor half of the seventh inning.

Young Harris (23-18) brought in the third pitcher of the game to start the seventh inning and Delta State proceeded to score three times on three hits.  Thibodeaux would walk and come around to score on a series of errors on the defense, first on a fielding error during Sullivan's at bat and secondly on a throwing error by the third basemen with Chovanec batting.  Hinton picked up two RBI with a single to left field that brought home Sullivan and Chovanec to bring the score to 10-2 heading to the seventh-inning stretch to complete the scoring for the game.

Casey Greene (2-1, 4.43 ERA) picked up the start, pitching five innings and gave up seven hits and one walk while striking out two and yielding just the two runs in the first inning.  Drew Milligan pitched two innings of hitless relief while facing just six batters.  Trevor Blocker pitched the eighth inning, giving up just one base hit.  Taylor Stark ended the game with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, including a strike out.

Delta State scored 10 runs on 13 hits, including seven of the nine starters picking up at least one base hit and eight different starters crossing home plate.  Hinton went 4-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored.  Herrington, Robertson, and Sullivan each had two hits.  Chovanec and Herrington scored twice each with Herrington, Robertson, and Sullivan driving in two RBI apiece.

Delta State will continue the road portion of the schedule with a non-conference weekend series at Southern Arkansas (29-10).  The series will feature a doubleheader on Saturday, April 12 beginning at 3 p.m. with a solo game on Sunday, April 13 with a 1 p.m. first pitch
