Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Alabama – The No. 4 Delta State University baseball team opened the Gulf South Conference Tournament Friday, May 2 with 15-2 run rule victory over Christian Brothers University (11-34) at Young Memorial Field on the campus of the University of Alabama-Birmingham. DSU (36-9) faces Valdosta State University in the second round on Saturday, May 3 at 7 p.m.
Brent Langston's two-RBI double off the left field wall in the bottom of the first inning set the tone for the Statesmen early. The senior's shot to the gap plated
Jordan Chovanec and
Will Robertson for the 2-0 lead after the first.
CBU starter Jack Parker gave up DSU's third run in the second, as Robertson laced an RBI single to right to score Jonathon Andrews from third.
Tyler Burnett put the Bucs on the board in the top of the third with an RBI single to center, cutting the lead to 3-1.
The Statesmen added two runs in the bottom of the frame on Andrews' RBI single to right and a bases-loaded walk to Robertson. DSU chased Parker in the inning, as Michael Lartigue came on in relief.
After a scoreless top of the fourth for CBU, DSU erupted for six runs on three hits to break the game open and take a commanding 11-1 lead.
DSU tacked on four runs in bottom of the fifth to expand the lead to 15-1. Hinton and Andrews provided RBI singles for the Statesmen.

Mike Kinnison pulled starter Jonathon Moody in the fifth for
Casey Greene.
After a one out triple by Josh Hopkins off reliever Greene, CBU plated their second run of the game in the top of the sixth on a bases loaded hit-by-pitch for Casey Goodwin.
After a scoreless bottom of the sixth, Greene closed the door on the Bucs in the top of the seventh for the 15-2 run-rule victory.
Moody (9-2) earned his ninth victory of the season in the outing for the Statesmen. The junior from Millington, Tennessee worked 5.0 innings and gave up one run on five hits with walk and five strikeouts.
Parker (1-4) was saddled with the loss for the Bucs.
Andrews led DSU at the plater after going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs. Robertson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Langston finished with two RBIs as well.
Burnett led CBU with three hits and an RBI.
In the earlier games of the day, West Florida defeated West Georgia 3-0, Alabama-Huntsville edged North Alabama 3-2 and Valdosta State downed West Alabama 9-2.
