DSU Earns Tie in Exhibition with MVSU

Box Score

CLEVELAND, Mississippi – A hot afternoon in the Delta saw in-state rivals, Delta State and Mississippi Valley, meet on the pitch for women's soccer exhibition play.

Senior Kellie Hendle had an outstanding day, scoring the first two goals of the game in the opening ten minutes of play to put the Lady Statesmen up 2-0 over the Devilettes.

In the 30th minute, MVSU got on the board courtesy of Nykosi Simmons, notching the score at 2-1.

Following a Valley foul, DSU's Rebecca Deegan responded on a free kick that found the top, back portion of the net. With the score 3-1 in Delta State's favor, Simmons went on to score two more goals for Mississippi Valley, tying the score at three all. The score stood for the final.

The Green-and-White outshot MVSU in shots, 11-5, and shots-on-goal, 5-4. Katie Swaine picked up the tie in-goal.

Overall, head coach Paul Babba was pleased with the performance. "Our goals today were to work on our defensive structure, making sure we were organized, and we did that. We saw a lot of good things and also things we need to work on. I think the exhibition served its purpose."

The Lady Statesmen are back in action September 6 against Belhaven University. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. in Jackson.
