Box Score CARROLLTON, Georgia – For the fifth straight game the Lady Statesmen soccer team of Delta State University competed on the road as they faced West Georgia in Gulf South Conference play. DSU fell to UWG 2-1 Friday afternoon.
Delta State (1-4-0, 0-2 GSC) spoiled a shutout for the second consecutive game by scoring a late goal but falling short once again.
Scoring was at a stalemate for most of the first half until West Georgia's Katie Phillips recorded her second goal of the season, putting the Wolves up one-nil in the 41
st minute of play.
Offense was slow to start for both squads well into the second half. West Georgia struck first again on a Katy Mixon goal, giving UWG the two-goal advantage at the 71:17 mark.
DSU's
Rebecca Deegan quickly answered four minutes later with her first goal of the season following a foul by West Georgia.
The late offensive surge was not enough for the Green-and-White to pull ahead as they dropped the match by a final of 2-1.
Erin Tucker led the way with four of the total twelve shots taken by DSU.
Lakyn Cryder and
Tais Cotta added a couple shots apiece, while
Caroline Arrington,
Kailey Bryan, Deegan, and
Tabitha Hayden all contributed one shot. Cotta and Cryder each tallied numbers to the shots on goal column with Tucker taking three and Deegan notching one with the lone goal.
Katie Swaine was in goal and suffered the loss, giving up two goals but snagging two saves.
Delta State looks to bounce back in its home opener on Sunday, Sept. 21 against GSC opponent Valdosta State. Kickoff is set for 12:00 p.m. at Delta Field.
